Diagnostic Significance of CSF Spectrophotometry and Computer Tomography in Cerebrovascular Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
Two hundred and thirty-one patients with cerebrovascular disease were examined by spectrophotometry of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and by computer tomography. Many were followed by repeated examinations. Specific diagnoses — bleeding as opposed to non-hemorrhagic or hemorrhagic infarctions — were indicated in 97% by spectrophotometry and in 65% by CT scan in 201 of the 231 cases (excluding 25 patients with transient ischemic attacks and five patients with cerebral tumors with cerebrovascular onset). Comparison between the two methods revealed agreement in most cases, with disagreement in only a few. The specific diagnosis was generally established on only one examination by both methods: repeated examinations were necessary in only a few cases. The results indicated that a combination of the two complementary methods established the diagnosis in almost all cerebrovascular disorders. This was particularly evident if the examinations were performed 24 hours to 21 days after onset of disease.

متن کاملDetection of Alzheimer\\\\\\\'s Disease using Multitracer Positron Emission Tomography Imaging
Alzheimer's disease is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and demonstration of amyloid plaques. Individual positron emission tomography tracers may reveal specific signs of pathology that is not readily apparent on inspection of another one. Combination of multitracer positron emission tomography imaging yields promising results. In this paper, 57 Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging ini...
متن کاملCerebrospinal fluid analyses for the diagnosis of subarachnoid haemorrhage and experience from a Swedish study. What method is preferable when diagnosing a subarachnoid haemorrhage?
Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) has a high mortality and morbidity rate. Early SAH diagnosis allows the early treatment of a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, which improves the prognosis. Diagnostic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analyses may be performed after a negative computed tomography scan, but the precise analytical methods to be used have been debated. Here, we summarize the scientific evidence f...
متن کاملShould Spectrophotometry Be Used to Identify Xanthochromia in the Cerebrospinal Fluid of Alert Patients Suspected of Having Subarachnoid Hemorrhage?
Background and Purpose—The absence of xanthochromia in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is often used to exclude subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Authorities advocate spectrophotometry to measure xanthochromia, but most North American hospitals use visual inspection. We studied the diagnostic accuracy of spectrophotometry for SAH, and its potential impact on current practice. Methods—This was a pros...
